Regret

A well-loved hymn by Mary Baker Eddy, the Founder of Christian Science says in part, “O make me glad for every scalding tear, For hope deferred, ingratitude, disdain! Wait and love more for every hate, and fear no ill, since God is good and loss is gain.” (Mother’s Evening Prayer) How could one possibly think that loss is gain, when we may feel isolated, desperate, unloved because of some circumstance? Yet, to lose a sense of grief and gain peace turns us to consider new possibilities. Witnessing the transformation of regret into a maturing sense of ourselves is the Reading Room’s task for us this month.
